Driving to Lewiston
from Moscow via US-95 can be quite an experience. The road really is
pretty good considering the topography, the scenery beautiful and,
finally, you reach the junction of US-195 which comes in from Washington.
Shortly afterwards you descent 2,000 feet to the Clearwater River. True,
the road has been improved, little by little over the years, but it is an
experience.
On the opposite shore of the Snake River from Lewiston, in the
State of Washington, is Clarkston, Lewiston's sister city. As you may have
guessed, they are named in honor of the Corps of Discovery explorers,
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Lewiston and Clarkston are at the
confluence of the Clearwater and Snake Rivers and, though quite isolated,
is a very attractive community. They are also Idaho's only seaport, - yes,
seaport. Navigation some 465 miles from the Pacific, up the Columbia River
and then up the Snake River (with a lot of continuous help from the U. S.
Army Corps of Engineers) makes this possible.
Lewiston was Idaho's first capital city (1863) and, because of the
