About the San Luis Obispo area

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa - Just off US-101 in San Luis Obispo is one of the oldest California Spanish mission, Mission San Luis Obispo. Founded in 1772 it had a turbulent history, was ransacked by land reformers but then restored and, today is a parish church for many area Catholics. The original padres' residence is not a fine museum and contains an extraordinary collection of early photographs and other items describing the early mission days of California.
The Mission has its own web site which includes a brief history of the Mission as well as a 'virtual tour' of the Mission. You can view it at: MissionSanLuisObispo.org.
Hearst State Historical Monument - Originally the residence of publisher William Randolph Hearst, this was his unofficial retreat where he frequently entertain his many rich and famous guests. Nick-named the Enchanted Hill, Hearst's Castle became a virtual museum and art gallery housing some of the finest art from around the world. Some of this art is on display and is viewable by visitors to the site.
Famous for its indoor swimming pools (one replicating a Roman bath) and exquisite marble work, the Hearst Castle, as it is popularly known, is a must see for visitors to California. It is about 31 miles north of San Luis Obispo on CA state highway 1. Several modes of transportation are available but most visitors use automobile. The Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument is now part of the California State Parks System. Tours are offered daily. For information and reservations phone (toll-free) 1-800-444-4445.    Several excellent accommodations are in San Simeon including the Best Western Cavalier Oceanfront Resort (San Simeon's only oceanfront accommodation). To view the entire list, see: San Simeon area discount hotels
